Supporting the West & Central Village Community During the COVID-19 Crisis

On April 29, 2020, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newark opened a food pantry at the West & Central Village Community Resource Hub in response to COVID-19’s profound economic effects on the neighborhood. Many residents of Newark’s West & Central Village are reeling from the sudden loss or lessening of wages caused by COVID-19. Demand is strong for the Hub’s food pantry: we ran out of food within 15 minutes on our first distribution day. We anticipate that the amount of neighborhood residents needing food assistance will increase as COVID-19’s effects ripple across the New Jersey economy.

Study Area

The map here shows the boundaries of the Study Area. This area was determined in consultation with the Wells Fargo Regional Foundation, based on their recommendation that neighborhood planning areas be compact to facilitate progress monitoring once the plan begins implementation.

Although the Study Area does not include the entire West and Central Wards, all residents are encouraged to participate since many of the discussions will focus on issues that affect the entire city.
